Meaning: O RAma! Why do you continue to turn a deaf ear to my appeals for your grace? Having heard of your magnanimity and glory, I have come to you with unwavering faith and hope. A mere forest-dweller SugrIva (also meaning one having a nice neck or voice) seeking relief from the murderous onslaughts of his brother, surrendered at your feet. Did you not protect him? Have I not a good neck or voice? A RAkshasa (VibhIshana) roaming about the night, belonging to a race inimical to you, unable to put up with the piercing taunts and insults of his mighty brother, fell at your feet. Were his words only sweet as the parrot's to attract your grace immediately? Are my words fearful (VibhIshanamu, meaning fearful)? Knowing that this TyAgarAja, whose only ambition in life is to sing your glory ceaselessly like a garland of golden beads, is a true devotee of yours, why don't you listen to my appeals?
