The shimmering, full-bodied resonance of the santoor is instantly recognizable, yet two instruments can exhibit vast tonal differences even when tuned to identical pitches and struck with the exact same mallets. While string gauge, bridge placement, and player execution contribute heavily to the overall output, the timber selected for the trapezoidal soundbox serves as the fundamental acoustic foundation. For students and music learners evaluating instruments, the choice predominantly centers on two primary hardwoods: Kashmiri Walnut and Indian Rosewood.



Kashmiri walnut has long served as the traditional gold standard in santoor construction. It produces a warm, deep, and cohesive acoustic tone characterized by smooth low frequencies, a rich midrange, and softened treble response. Because walnut features a relatively porous grain structure, the soundboard naturally absorbs the harsh, high-frequency transients generated when the mallets strike the metal strings. Instead of delivering a sharp acoustic spike, the soundbox allows the vibrations to bloom slowly, creating a broad, continuous sustain. This results in a bright, articulate tone with exceptional note definition and bell-like clarity. Unlike walnut, which diffuses adjacent notes into a unified soundscape, rosewood maintains clear separation between individual pitches, even during rapid successions of strikes. For music learners focused on mastering high-speed scalar runs, fast rhythmic subdivisions, and precise mallet technique, rosewood provides immediate acoustic feedback by making every strike clearly audible.


Selecting between these two tonewoods comes down to the intended sonic profile and musical priorities of the performer. Walnut delivers the classic, resonant, and warm acoustic footprint associated with traditional solo performances, offering a forgiving soundboard for developing players. Rosewood provides bright projection, sharp rhythmic definition, and crisp articulation that excels in fast compositions and ensemble settings.
