"Bhavayami Raghuramam: The Joyful Notes of Nattakurinji"

For any student of Carnatic music, the composition "Bhavayami Raghuramam" is a masterclass in raga transitions. Composed by the visionary Maharaja Swathi Thirunal, this Ragamalika (a garland of ragas) beautifully encapsulates the entire Ramayana.

Among its many sections, the first Charanam, set in the soulful Raga Nattakurinji, holds a special place. It depicts the Bala Kanda, the chapter of Lord Rama’s divine childhood and his early heroic deeds.

The Divine Mood of Nattakurinji

Nattakurinji is a "Rakti" raga, meaning it possesses an inherent melodic charm that appeals directly to the heart. Derived from the 28th Melakarta, Harikambhoji, it is a Janya raga that exudes a sense of joy, auspiciousness, and deep devotion (Bhakti).

In the context of the Bala Kanda, Nattakurinji is the perfect choice. Its bright yet gentle movement reflects the innocence of a child, the grace of a prince, and the peace of a kingdom. When you sing the phrases of this raga, you aren't just hitting notes; you are painting a picture of a young Rama.

Understanding the Structure (Scale)

Nattakurinji is categorized as a Vakra Raga. "Vakra" means "crooked" or "zigzag," referring to the fact that the notes do not move in a straight line during the ascent or descent. This unique path is exactly what gives the raga its "Rakti" or soul.

  • Arohanam (The Ascent): Sa Ri Ga Ma Ni Dha Ni Pa Dha Ni Sa

  • Avarohanam (The Descent): Sa Ni Dha Ma Ga Ri Sa

Note for Learners: Notice the jump from Ni to Pa and back in the ascent. This specific movement is a signature of Nattakurinji. The Madhyamam (Ma) and Nishadam (Ni) are the life-giving notes of this raga; they carry the weight of its emotional expression.

The Lyrics: "Dinakara Anvaya Tilakam"

The Nattakurinji section of the song begins with these powerful words:

“Dinakara anvaya tilakam divya maanusha vigraham...”

The Meaning: The lyrics describe Rama as the "Tilaka" (the most distinguished one) of the Solar Dynasty (Dinakara Anvaya). It speaks of him as the divine personified in human form. This section covers key events from his youth, including:

  • His birth as the son of King Dasharatha.

  • Protecting the sacrifice (Yagna) of Sage Viswamitra.

  • The slaying of the demoness Tataka.

The stable and cheerful nature of Nattakurinji provides a rhythmic and melodic foundation that makes these stories come alive for the listener.

Practical Tips for Music Students

If you are currently learning this Charanam, here are a few focus areas to improve your rendition:

  1. The "Ma" Emphasis: In Nattakurinji, the note Madhyamam (Ma) is very prominent. When descending (Sa Ni Dha Ma), ensure the transition is smooth and that the Ma is steady.

  2. Differentiating from Sahana: This is a common challenge for beginners. While both ragas share similar notes, the "Dha" (Dhaivatham) in Nattakurinji is handled differently. Nattakurinji is generally "brighter" and moves more quickly than the meditative, heavy-gamaka style of Sahana.

  3. The Transitions: Since this is a Ragamalika, pay close attention to the Chitta Swarams (the rhythmic solfege sections). The transition from the opening Saveri raga into Nattakurinji should feel like moving from a serious, meditative state into a joyful, morning-like brightness.

  4. Listening Observation: Listen to the legendary M.S. Subbulakshmi. Pay attention to how she emphasizes the lyrics while maintaining the strict "Vakra" structure of the raga.
